The very first thing that may arise in your mind when you read the title is “What are trackbacks and pingbacks?”. If you are into content writing, these terms may sound familiar to you; you may have heard or read about them, but you may not know what exactly they are and what do they do. If that is the case, read on to find out all that you need and want to know.

What are Pingbacks?

Pingbacks are XML or remote procedure calls that encode; but they do not actually send back an actual content. They use HTTP and transports it from one site to another when the author from the former site writes some links to the latter. A hyperlink is required and on receiving a signal, the latter site checks the incoming link by going back to the former site. Correct linking results in successful recording of the pingback. The most important thing to remember is that they are automatic. Some features of Pingbacks are:

  • You can send them automatically through software.
  • The pingbacks should be approved so that the preferred ones link to your blog or website.
  • They can be turned off through settings under your discussion.

What are Trackbacks?

Trackbacks can be basically considered as acknowledgements  A PING can be sent manually from a website to another through them. Their chief field of usage is blogs and if you are into blog content writing, they can prove to be of great help. You can communicate in blogs through trackbacks and let authors know that they have been referenced in the post you write. These are used by many companies for sending spam links so that money can be generated from them.

There are some websites and blogs which have stopped using trackbacks as they promote many spam links and while using them, you need to keep a constant check on the spam amount. The rest use software in order to stop those trackbacks which might be spammy. Some software even eliminate all of them completely. If you use WordPress, you get an option in each of the posts of checking off Send Trackbacks. There are many people who have started doing this recently and another feature which is worth mentioning is the fact that they can be edited just like comments, which is done with the help of software. Some of its other features are:

  • If you want to avoid them, go to WordPress settings and check them off in the Discussion section.
  • If approved, they will appear in the comment portion of your page or post.

Most people have an ongoing love-hate relationship with trackbacks. If spamming can be avoided, they can give great value. Since nobody wants spam daily, most people prefer Pingbacks which are considerably less spammy than the usual trackback. So while content writing for your blog, decide on which is more apt for you.
